Daniel 9 Explained

The 70-Week Prophecy, the Messiah, and God’s Covenant Faithfulness

Introduction: Daniel 9 — Prophecy Rooted in Prayer and the Gospel

Daniel 9 stands at the heart of biblical prophecy. It reveals that prophecy is not given merely to satisfy curiosity, but to lead God’s people to repentance, confidence, and faith in the Messiah.

This chapter:

  • Explains the time element left unexplained in Daniel 8
  • Reveals the exact timing of Christ’s ministry and sacrifice
  • Connects judgment with mercy
  • Shows prophecy unfolding within God’s covenant love

Ellen G. White beautifully summarizes:

“The seventy weeks are allotted to the Jewish people.”
The Great Controversy, p. 327

Daniel 9 shows that the cross is the center of all prophecy.

Daniel 9:1–2 — Studying Prophecy Leads to Prayer

“I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years…”

Daniel studies Jeremiah’s prophecy of the 70-year captivity (Jeremiah 25:11–12).

Key lesson:
👉 Prophecy drives God’s people to prayer, not speculation.

Ellen G. White writes:

“Daniel was not content to trust to his own understanding.”
Prophets and Kings, p. 554

Daniel 9:3–6 — Confession and Corporate Repentance

Daniel prays:

  • With fasting
  • With humility
  • On behalf of the whole nation

Notice Daniel says “we have sinned”, though he personally was faithful.

Ellen G. White observes:

“Daniel identified himself with the sins of his people.”
Prophets and Kings, p. 555

End-time application: God’s remnant intercedes for a broken world.

Daniel 9:7–10 — God’s Righteousness and Human Failure

Daniel acknowledges:

  • God is just
  • God keeps covenant
  • Israel broke trust

This prayer reflects the spirit of true revival.

Daniel 9:11–14 — Judgment Is Deserved, Yet Mercy Is Sought

Daniel recognizes that the curse came because God’s law was ignored.

This connects prophecy to obedience.

Ellen G. White notes:

“God’s judgments were not arbitrary, but corrective.”
Prophets and Kings, p. 556

Daniel 9:15–19 — A Plea for God’s Glory

Daniel’s plea is not based on merit—but mercy.

“For the Lord’s sake.”

True prayer seeks God’s honor, not human benefit.

Daniel 9:20–21 — Heaven Responds Quickly

Before Daniel finishes praying, Gabriel arrives.

“At the beginning of your supplications the command went out.”

God answers sincere prayer without delay.

Daniel 9:22–23 — “You Are Greatly Beloved”

This phrase reassures Daniel—and all believers—that prophecy flows from love.

Ellen G. White comments:

“Heaven takes note of the earnest prayers of God’s servants.”
Prophets and Kings, p. 558

Daniel 9:24 — The Purpose of the 70 Weeks

The 70 weeks (490 years) were given to:

  • Finish transgression
  • End sin
  • Make reconciliation
  • Bring in everlasting righteousness
  • Seal vision and prophecy
  • Anoint the Most Holy

This is a gospel prophecy, centered on Christ.

Daniel 9:25 — The Coming of the Messiah

“From the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem…”

The decree of Artaxerxes (457 BC) marks the starting point.

After 69 weeks (483 years):
👉 Jesus is baptized in AD 27

Ellen G. White affirms:

“The time of Christ’s baptism was marked with exactness.”
The Desire of Ages, p. 233

Daniel 9:26 — The Cross Foretold

“Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself.”

This unmistakably predicts the crucifixion.

Adventist scholar Gerhard Pfandl notes:

“No prophecy in Scripture more clearly predicts the atonement.”
— Biblical Research Institute

Daniel 9:27 — Covenant Confirmed, Sacrifice Ended

In the midst of the final week (AD 31):

  • Christ is crucified
  • Sacrificial system ends in meaning
  • The veil is torn (Matthew 27:51)

This confirms the end of earthly sacrifices.

Ellen G. White writes:

“The sacrifice and oblation ceased at the cross.”
The Great Controversy, p. 327
